Like it or not, none of us can prevent emergency situations; the best we can do is to prepare for them. Somewhere, there’s a balance between being prepared and fretting about the many “what if” scenarios in life, and that line can be difficult to find. When we do face emergency situations — whether they come in the form of natural disasters, accidents, or medical emergencies — we’ll all be more likely to move past the initial tendency to panic if we have a plan in place. Even if you DIY your home renovation, you probably realize that sometimes it’s actually more cost effective to hire a professional to complete certain aspects of your project. They have the right tools and expertise and can save you valuable money — and sanity! The same is true for dealing with your renovation-related waste. Even if you’re donating or dropping off some of it on your own (read Part 1), you might decide that professional waste-removal will be necessary. If so, here are some general guidelines that can make the process as pain-free as possible.
The Inexpensive Route
A step up from the DIY route, the most cost-effective professional service is usually your normal trash collection service. Simply contact the existing company you use and ask about bulk waste pickup options. The amount they charge will be based on size and/or weight of the waste. Usually similarly priced, companies specializing in renovation waste removal are added options. You’ll want to call around in your area to find out what the best deal would be. [Read more…]
While we all want to do our best to avoid getting into a motor vehicle crash, we also want to make sure we’re prepared, in case one does occur. As with any type of disaster, we can take steps ahead of time to avoid the added burden of panic that comes when we have no clue what to do. It may help to review each of these five using one of your five fingers.
Step 1: Check for Injuries
Of course, you’ll want to start with yourself, being careful not to move until you’re sure you’re not seriously injured. If you are, call 911 or ask someone else in your vehicle or on the scene to do so. If you’re not seriously injured, you’ll then want to check on any passengers and call for help, if needed. Then, make sure your vehicle isn’t causing a hazard for other vehicles; if it is, and it is safe to drive, pull it off to the side of the road. If you cannot move it, turn off the engine, turn on your hazard lights, and prioritize getting yourself and your passengers to safety. If you have road flares, activate them to help other vehicles avoid hitting yours as you wait for help. [Read more…]
Are you itching to get your DIY home renovation on? If so, you might not have thought about one of the unfortunate byproducts of your much-anticipated projects: waste. Whether you’re replacing siding or building a new deck, you’ll probably end up with more overflow than you plan on. Instead of risking your driveway’s appearance as a neighborhood junk yard, overshadowing the beauty of your newly renovated home, you can plan ahead to employ responsible and cost-effective methods to reduce the clutter associated with home construction.
Donate the Good Stuff
While you’ve been waiting to get rid of those dated light fixtures, others might treasure them as the perfect vintage find. Your upgraded appliances might allow you to bless someone who doesn’t have the money to buy an older, basic model, brand new. You can choose from several beneficiaries, helping various community organizations or individuals. With all the reno you’re doing, you probably don’t want to spare the time to drop off or deliver your unwanted items, but if they’re in working order, you can probably get people to come take them off your hands.
