Whether you rent a moving truck or hire movers, there are some steps you can take to make sure you avoid any unnecessary hurdles during your move. If you’ve never moved before or it’s been a while, you may not realize all that goes into a successful relocation. No matter how far you’re moving or how much stuff you have, the goal is always to safely arrive at your destination, without using any more energy or money than necessary. If that sounds like a good idea to you, read on!
Plan Ahead by Purging & Packing Efficiently
Moving provides an excellent opportunity to both purge and catalog your belongings. There’s no sense in taking the time and effort to pack up items you no longer use or appreciate — or spending the money to move them! So use this time to get rid of any unneeded stuff. And since you’re going through all your possessions anyway, packing offers the perfect opportunity to create a home inventory, something that will be extremely helpful to have in case you need to file a homeowners or renters’ insurance claim.
As you pack, be sure to use bubble wrap, newspaper, or some other material to provide padding for breakable items, and pack each box as full as possible, without stressing the box. Then label each one according to the destination room and the box’s contents. Be careful not to keep too many odd-sized or odd-shaped items unpacked; these things can easily add up, making packing a truck far more difficult than it needs to be.
Plan Ahead by Researching Your Options
Whether you’ll be using a full-service moving company, renting a truck to move yourself, or something in-between, it’s important to do your research ahead of time. Be cautious about using a little-known moving company; while prices may be cheaper, you could end up losing all of your belongings. Never be afraid to ask a prospective mover for references and be certain to ask your friends & neighbors for personal recommendations, while checking reviews online and asking the local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce in your area about reputable companies. As you schedule your move, you should also realize that some moving companies may not be available on holiday weekends.
Plan Ahead with Insurance
As you plan for moving day, there are two types of insurance you need to make sure you have in place: coverage for the rental truck and coverage for your possessions when they’re in the truck. Ask your insurance agent or review your auto insurance policy to make sure it includes coverage of a rental vehicle. (Note that many automobile insurance policies that include rental vehicle coverage will not cover larger vehicles, such as a moving truck, so you will probably need to purchase this kind of coverage separately through the truck rental company.) You will also want to ask your insurance agent about coverage for your belongings, while they’re en route from your former residence to your new home.
