Even if you DIY your home renovation, you probably realize that sometimes it’s actually more cost effective to hire a professional to complete certain aspects of your project. They have the right tools and expertise and can save you valuable money — and sanity! The same is true for dealing with your renovation-related waste. Even if you’re donating or dropping off some of it on your own (read Part 1), you might decide that professional waste-removal will be necessary. If so, here are some general guidelines that can make the process as pain-free as possible.
The Inexpensive Route
A step up from the DIY route, the most cost-effective professional service is usually your normal trash collection service. Simply contact the existing company you use and ask about bulk waste pickup options. The amount they charge will be based on size and/or weight of the waste. Usually similarly priced, companies specializing in renovation waste removal are added options. You’ll want to call around in your area to find out what the best deal would be.

A Newer Innovation
One option many people don’t realize is out there is a collapsible trash bin. For small or mid-range amounts of waste, these containers can hold up to 3,300 pounds of waste from your home renovation. The most popular option is The Bagster.
Once you find out if such a service is available in your area, you can purchase your bin, take it home, fill it, and then call to schedule your pickup. Because you are paying for both the trash receptacle and trash pickup, this option is typically more expensive than using a traditional trash pickup service.
The Traditional Route
We’re sure you’ve seen construction dumpsters at all kinds of building sites. If you’ll have a large amount of renovation waste, you may want to consider using a roll-off trash bin. Ranging from 10 to 40 cubic yards, these heavy metal containers can be opened at one end to accommodate large items you cannot lift into them. Depending on your lot size and location, you may need to look into getting a permit to place the trash bin on the road near your home. Typically, these bins are rented by the week or month, costing more the longer you keep them. There are usually restrictions as to the types of materials you can include, so you’ll want to be sure to ask about those details. The locally owned York, PA based Tiger Trash as well as the national company Waste Management offer dumpster rentals for residences and businesses.
Whichever method of waste removal you choose, you’ll want to be specific about the amount of waste as well as the types of items you’ll need to have removed. However much or little waste you have, you don’t want to waste your money! After all, we’re sure you’d much rather put every dollar you can into the renovation project, itself. If you plan ahead and choose wisely, you’ll save yourself both money and frustration so you can actually enjoy your project.
