Many of us go to one extreme or another when it comes to death: avoiding the topic or obsessing over it. Neither denial nor anxiety is a healthy answer, though — and neither prevents a person from it. We can’t offer you the fountain of youth or immortality, but we can help you face your fear of death by making sure those you love will be provided for in your absence.
The Problem with Denial
Even those who act as if they’re unconcerned about death may be living in an even deeper state of denial than those who admittedly avoid the topic.
It’s a sobering thing to realize our days are numbered; if you need a rough estimate, you can check out the life expectancy table found here.
While insurance rates are all about risk assessment, the fact about death is that it’s guaranteed. Throughout history, the death rate is constant: 100% of people die. The best we can do is to be prepared for it in practical ways that will lessen the stress on those we love when our time does come. That isn’t being pessimistic: It’s being realistic and loving. When we choose to let our fears override our love for others, we’re not doing anyone any favors.
The Issue with Obsession
Most people who openly fear or obsess about death seem to forget that worry or anxiety does nothing to ward it off or add moments to a lifetime. Instead, it robs us of the good things we can enjoy today. So while denial is certainly not the answer, living in fear and obsessing about death isn’t healthy, either.
In fact, anxiety can actually impact your overall health negatively by weakening your immune system, as this author explains. The truth is that most of the time our phobias are illogical anyway, and what we worry about is actually far from realistic.

The Benefit of Insurance
Conservative financial expert Dave Ramsey encourages heads of household to purchase Term Life Insurance and to make sure they purchase enough to provide for their families: “Plenty of coverage will allow them to live comfortably and maintain their lifestyle until they figure out the next step in their lives.”
By refusing to live in denial or anxiety about death and instead do what you can to make sure your family is taken care of, you’re facing your fear in a healthy and responsible way and can move on to experience life to the fullest.
