Travel in general — and holiday travel, in particular — presents some unique opportunity for thieves. If you know what they’re looking for, you can reduce your chances of being targeted. The last thing you want to think about on a pleasure trip is the possibility of being robbed, but trust us: you’d much prefer to consider it now, rather than after it happens to you.
Protecting Your Home While You’re Away
When you do plan to travel, there are some precautions you can take. In addition to making sure all windows are secure and doors are locked before you go, there are steps you can take to make your home appear to be occupied, even when you are away. Instead of having mail held, you could continue to have it delivered and ask a neighbor to pick it up for you.
A well-lit home will be much less likely to be robbed. If you’re going out of town, you can keep your place lit up and looking lived-in by setting any outdoor holiday lighting and a few interior lights to come on and off with a timer; some timers even allow for a random setting, so would-be thieves who are paying attention can’t determine a set schedule, thus preventing them from being sure a timer is being used.
Reducing Opportunities for Theft at the Airport
Of course, even when you travel, you bring a few possessions along, right? Thieves know that holiday travelers are often bearing gifts, and they might assume that the nicer the luggage, the more expensive the gifts. You can easily ship any particularly pricey items ahead, insuring them. You can also keep your luggage from being targeted by leaving designer styles at home and opting, instead, for a more basic set.
As you go through security checkpoints at the airport, watch your bags carefully, and retrieve them as soon as you can; it really won’t hurt to wait an extra few seconds to replace your shoes. When you put your carry-on bags in overhead compartments, position the bags so that any zippers are facing in, not out; doing so will make it more difficult for a thief to take something out of your bags.
Being Proactive About Replacements
No matter how cautious you may be, you may not be able to prevent a home break-in or burglary while you travel. You won’t ever regret keeping a detailed inventory of your possessions, and Allstate® makes it easier than ever for you, with the Digital Locker app — which is free, whether you’re currently an Allstate customer, or not! By creating a digital inventory of your belongings, you’ll be in the best place possible to have them quickly replaced if you are ever the victim of a theft.
