Unlike the average European who typically moves only 4 times in their lifetime, the average American moves a whopping 11 times (11.4, to be precise). In fact, 24% of us move every five years. With all the box-packing and address-changing most of us Americans do in our lifetimes, we’re not always very efficient about the process.
While a move may be unsettling, as a rule that doesn’t have to mean that everything is out of control. Like any well-planned event or activity, your upcoming move can be far less stressful that it might otherwise be. Like a successful business venture, you just need to strategize, budget, and plan well, and you’ll be able to arrive in your new home with a smile.
You might be able to “wing it” when it comes to a date night or birthday celebration, but your move is definitely not something you want to leave to chance or last-minute luck. Even if you’re only moving across town and from one apartment to another, failure to plan ahead can mean added expenses and high amounts of stress. Ideally, you should start planning up to a year before your upcoming move.

When it comes to timing your move well, make sure to hire a moving company well in advance of your moving date. While summer seems to be ideal with milder weather, many movers are extremely busy that time of year. Spring and autumn can get hectic for them too, but if you choose to move during winter, be aware that companies may close during the holidays.
Not only is the season which you choose significant, but the time of day or day of the week can make a difference, too. Some moving companies charge more for weekend rentals or moves, and moving during peak times of the day can mean added expense (if you’re paying per hour for a rental).
A month or more before you move, research moving companies in your area. Be sure to check reviews or ask for personal recommendations. Choosing a company with a solid reputation can help you avoid being overcharged or having your property stolen or damaged.
Even if you’re planning to rent a truck or trailer and transport your belongings on your own, be sure to reserve it in advance. Ask about the cargo space and consider stopping by ahead of time to eyeball the truck you think will hold all your possessions.
