We hear them all the time: excuses for why people don’t buy life insurance. We’re guessing yours are probably on our list of top reasons you may think you don’t need life insurance when you actually do. So without further ado, here they are.
“I’m Healthy & Young”
No matter how active your lifestyle and well-balanced your diet, you’re not immortal. Perhaps your chances of dying this year or this decade are fairly slim, but there is still that chance. What’s more, when you’re young and healthy, you’ll qualify for the best rates and won’t risk being rejected due to major health issues or previous insurance. If and when those prize characteristics of your body change, you may realize that life insurance would be a good idea. However, by then, you’ll either pay more for it or possibly fail to qualify for a policy at all.
“It’s Not for Me”
It’s not uncommon for people to think life insurance is only for parents of young children or senior citizens. There are certainly life insurance products designed with those demographics in view, but there are also other life insurance products tailor-made for healthy single adults who are far from their retirement years.
“I Can’t Afford It”
Our favorite response to this one is usually, “Really? How much do you think it costs?” Most people stutter and stammer in response, because, well, they have no clue. First, no matter how tight money may be, a life insurance can almost always be drawn up in a way that fits into your personal budget. Second, money will be far tighter for your spouse, significant other, or family members who end up having to shell out money in the case of your untimely death – if you don’t have a policy in place. Third, life insurance policies often cost far less than people imagine that they will. Try less than the cost of a daily cup of coffee or a weekly restaurant meal. Yeah, we thought you could afford it after all.
“I Already Have a Life Insurance Policy at Work”
Many employee benefits packages include life insurance coverage. But what kind of policy is it, and what would it cover? Most have no clue. And even if they do, they often fail to realize that not only does the policy fail to compensate for both loss of income and funeral expenses, but the policy will probably become null and void if and when you leave that employer.
“I’ll Get Around To Buying Life Insurance Someday”
As we all know, none of us is guaranteed a tomorrow. While there’s no deadline by which you must purchase life insurance and no mandate from the government requiring you to do so, there’s definitely a time that will come when it will be too late, and those you love will wish you had thought ahead to keep them from the financial burden added to their grief.
